TEFLON is a Registered Trademark name owned by E.I Dupont de Nemours Co. now known as Chemours Co.
The word Teflon is a commonly used word for a fluoroplastic high purity material and the true name of that material is Polytetrafluoroethylene.
"PTFE" is the abreviation of that Polytetrafluoroethylene was discovered by accident in April of 1938 by Dr Roy Plunkett and his assistant Jack Rebok working with gases related to Freon refrigerants while being employed by Chemours Co Dupont research laboratories in Edison , New Jersey .
What they discovered was tetrafluoroethylene or TFE. They ended up making about 100 lbs of it and was faced with the dilemma of storing it. They placed the TFE in small cylinders and froze it.
When they later checked the refrigerant they found the cylinders empty though they felt heavy enough that they still should have been full. They proceeded to cut one of the cylinders open and found that the TFE had polymerized into a white waxy powder. that was then called Polytetrafluoroethylene or "PTFE"
In 1946 Dupont trademarked the name TEFLON and for decades the word teflon has become a household name when referring to Polytetrafluoroethylene.
Being that Teflon was a trademarked name, any company , or individual using the word teflon in literature , etc..or in any form was to give acknowledgement of who trademarked the word teflon when describing Polytetrafluoroethylene.
Now that the internet became a reality Dupont decided to charge a licensing fee to use the word teflon. We will refrain from using that word to describe our PTFE .
